We have 3 super duty 6.0 diesels in our fleet. Every one of them has had injector problems as well as EGR problems. Expect many problems and due some research before buying one just because you see so many on the road. There is a reason why the 6.0L is Ford's shortest run of diesels ever (4 years). From what I've heard and read, the new 6.4 is no better. 8-12 MPG with 3 foot flames shooting from the exhaust pipe! Spend the 3K more and buy a GM! Nissan is introducing a diesel motor in 2 years, which will be the end to the super duty revolution!

I’m the third owner of this well maintained work horse. It is a bare bones F250 regular cab XL with the eight foot bed. It is the first year of the 3 valve designed 5.4 Triton motor (2005). She is no speed demon but she wasn’t designed for that. Previously the general maintenance was taken care of by a local garage, and I’m thankful the two previous elderly gentlemen that owned it ensured oil changes were done religiously. That is critical for any vehicle but especially these 5.4 motors. Also be sure to use a Ford Motorcraft oil filter and not an aftermarket one. A Ford mechanic told me this is one of the few vehicles that it does make a difference in the reliability of the motor. It doesn’t have 100,000 miles on it yet but, I’ve replaced the lifters as they were showing their age. I also did the rocker arms while I was in there. I probably should’ve done the cam phasers while I was in there too but didn’t want to spring the money for them as they weren’t knocking. Besides all the other fluids and routine maintenance, I tackled the spark plugs. The horror stories you hear about this are true. Only two plugs came out intact. All the rest separated, leaving the snout of the plug in the head. Luckily they make a tool (Lisle I believe it was) to extract the remaining part of the plug. It’s a pain but once you do the first, you realize the others will come out too with extra work. If your looking to purchase one of the three valve 5.4 Tritons be sure to ask if the spark plugs have been changed. Having done all the general maintenance and these other items, the truck runs great and has been very reliable. There is an intrinsic beauty of a bare bones work truck that just does what you ask it to do. My boys and I use this truck heavily as a truck and it hasn’t let us down. If you find a well maintained example and don’t expect it to be something it isn’t, this truck will serve you well.
